Today we met, Kenny (Haopeng) Tie, our December Student of the Month.
Kenny's story is one of tremendous resiliency. He came to Philadelphia from China in 2016. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Rosemount to start his Freshman Year. He did not speak English and felt alone and anxious. With the help of the RHS's ELD program and his good friend, Jay Wang, Kenny overcame his shyness and obstacles. We learned the ELD (English Language Development) program provides academic English language support to multilingual learners so they can acquire the skills and knowledge to succeed in school.
He is now an "A" student with hopes of attending the University of Pittsburgh with a focus on Computer Science.
He enjoys sharing his Chinese culture with his classmates and others.
I had the opportunity to visit with Kenny's high school wrestling coach. He spoke very highly of Kenny.
