February 2017 Student of the Month: Kiera Newson

The Rotary Club of Rosemount is pleased to announce that Rosemount High School senior Kiera Newson is its February 2017 Student of the Month.

Kiera lives in Apple Valley with her mother, Qiana Shack, and her younger sister Kimorah.

Kiera is a strong student whose focus in school has turned towards preparing for a career in law enforcement. She has taken CIS Anatomy and Physiology and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a college preparatory class.  She has also taken PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Option) at Inver Hills Community College.  She has taken General Psychology and Introduction to Statistics at Inver Hills, as well as Microeconomics. She has been named a Chemistry Student of the Month at RHS.

Newson is also active outside the classroom.  She is currently involved in Mosaic Diversity Club, National Spanish Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, for which she serves as Vice President.  She is also Captain of the Apple Valley Police Explorer Post.

During high school, she has tutored other students and has worked as a teaching assistant for Mrs. Deuth’s CIS Anatomy and Physiology class.  She also helps the Apple Valley Police Department with tobacco and alcohol compliance checks.

In her free time, Kiera enjoys watching TV and spending time with friends.

She plans to attend Hamline University and to major in Forensic Science/Phycology, minoring in Spanish and Criminology. Her long term plan is to pursue a career in the FBI’s behavioral sciences unit or to work for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
