The Rotary Club of Rosemount's May 2012 Student of the Month is Rosemount High School senior Lydia Karlson, daughter of Tom and Beth Karlson.

Lydia is an self-professed lover of learning who has posted an impressive academic performance as a student at RHS, earning a 4.0 GPA, completing six Advanced Placement courses, receiving membership in both the National and Spanish Honor Societies and having the distinction of being one of five valedictorians for the Class of 2012.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Lydia stays busy with a variety of extracurricular activities. She has been a choir member since kindergarten, most recently participating in concert choir and earning a superior rating in solo contest, and has played piano for 11 years. She also participates in soccer, track and cross country - the latter of which she speaks of with great regard thanks to exceptional coaching and team bonding. She was also a member of the Quiz and Knowledge Bowl teams, contributes to the RHS literary magazine and has been part of the RHS newspaper staff since she was a sophomore. This year, Lydia served as one of the co-editors of the newspaper and put out 10 issues - the most recent being a satire issue of which she is particularly proud.

Lydia also stays busy outside of her life at RHS. She regularly volunteers for Feed My Starving Children and at the Rosemount library where she can be founding shelving books or assisting with the summer reading program. Lydia is also active in her church, helping with its annual garage sale and mission projects. She has gone on three mission trips to date and will be headed for another this summer in Joplin, Mo.

After graduating from RHS, Lydia plans to attend Macalester college and become a double major in psychology and another area of study yet to be determined. Her hope is to eventually earn her doctorate in psychology and pursue a career path that advances education and learning in society.
